The Box

This was an experimental piece I worked on while freelancing at Strange & Wonderful. The premise was to create a box out of LED screens - essentially a small volume stage before volume stages existed. Using my previous experience in projection mapping, I set up the 3D and after effects templates to correctly adjust for perspective and projection onto the screens. Everything you see in the video was shot completely in camera with no post production. Using this method, we are able to get complex reflection and refraction in a live video environment with less time and more accuracy than doing a full CG piece.

This was truly my first project that I acted as a TD on. I was in charge of creating a template to conform 3D renders and animations in 2D into a perspective warped, projection mapped box that reacted predictably and correctly to changing camera positions, camera lenses, and sensor sizes. The result is a video made completely with practical effects, filled inside of a volume made of LED panels and able to change color, reflection, and footage interactively. We shot a huge amount of experimental footage before our editor, Ryan Hills, cut together this piece from the library of shots we had taken.

This work was produced and funded by Strange and Wonderful.
